A lot of project managers ran the same experiment two years ago. They typed a question about a head-of-wall joint at a two-hour rated corridor into a chatbot, got back a confident paragraph naming a UL design number, went to look it up, and found the number did not exist. That was the end of it for most contractors, and it should have been. A wrong answer delivered with total confidence is worse than no answer, because somebody acts on it.
What changed in 2026 is not that the models got more careful in some vague way. It is that the answer now comes with the document attached. That is a small-sounding change and it is the whole difference between a toy and something a superintendent can use before an inspection.
Level three, north corridor. The drywall sub has 400 linear feet of the two-hour corridor partition hung and taped. The superintendent is standing at the top of a ladder looking at where the wall meets the underside of the deck, and he wants to know two things before the special inspector arrives Thursday: which UL joint system applies at that head-of-wall condition, and whether the deflection detail requires a dynamic-rated joint or a static one.
The answer is in the documents. It is in specification section 07 84 43 for joint firestopping, on sheet A-512 in the partition types, possibly modified by ASI 6, and cross-referenced in the approved submittal for the firestop manufacturer. The superintendent is not going to read four documents at 6:50 a.m. He is going to call the project manager, who is driving, who says what he remembers.
Here is the clean version of what is now available: a grounded assistant can only answer from documents you have approved for that specific job, and it shows the sheet or spec section the answer came from — so a wrong answer is catchable instead of merely convincing.
Get it wrong and the special inspector rejects the condition under the Chapter 17 special inspection requirements. Then it is ceiling grid down, tear out the top track detail, install the correct joint system, re-inspect, and put the ceiling back. On 400 feet, that is not a small number.

Every commercial GC has four versions of the same wall type floating around the job: the bid set, the permit set, the conformed set, and whatever the sub actually has pinned up in his gang box. Add the addenda from bidding, six ASIs, forty-one RFI responses, the plan check corrections the AHJ marked up, and the approved submittals with the architect's stamp and exceptions taken.
Grounding only works if somebody decides what is in and what is out. That is a real job on your org chart — the project engineer doing document control, and on larger jobs a dedicated document control coordinator. Their work has always mattered; the difference now is that sloppy document control produces a confidently wrong machine answer instead of just a slow one.
The rule that works: the conformed set plus issued ASIs, closed RFI responses, and stamped submittals go in. Bid documents, superseded revisions, and anything with a "for reference only" stamp stay out entirely.

6:52 a.m. The superintendent asks from his phone, in his own words: "what firestop at head of wall, 2 hour corridor, level 3 north, and does it need to move." The answer comes back in under a minute: spec section 07 84 43 requires a dynamic joint system at deck deflection conditions, sheet A-512 partition type C2 calls the two-hour rating, ASI 6 revised the deflection allowance, and the approved submittal shows the specific manufacturer's system with the architect's exception noted. Four citations, each one a link to the document.
6:58 a.m. He opens sheet A-512 and reads it himself. That is the part people miss — the value is not that the machine answered, it is that checking took six minutes instead of an afternoon, so he actually checked.
7:10 a.m. Tailgate meeting. He tells the drywall foreman what is required and writes it into the daily report with the sheet and spec numbers, which is the record that matters in a year when somebody asks why it was built that way.
Thursday. The special inspector looks at the condition, at the submittal, and signs it. No tear-out, no re-inspection fee, no six days off the finish sequence.
Assumptions, and they are the arguable kind: 400 linear feet of two-hour rated corridor partition. Ceiling grid and tile removal and replacement to get access at $9 a foot. Firestop tear-out and correct joint system installed at $38 a foot including the sub's premium for out-of-sequence work. One re-inspection at $1,450. Six days lost on the finish sequence, which only costs you if it is on the critical path — assume it is, with liquidated damages of $2,900 a day.

If an event like that happens once every two years, its expected annual cost is $18,825 against $14,940 of setup and use. That is a thin margin, and it is thin on purpose — the case for grounding is not that it pays for itself on one rated wall. It is that the same setup answers the two hundred smaller questions a week that never rise to a tear-out but do cost your project managers their afternoons, and it produces citations you can put in a daily report.

A citation proves the answer came from a document. It does not prove the document governs. Your contract has an order of precedence clause, and when the drawings and the specifications disagree — which happens on every job, usually about backing and blocking — that clause decides, not the assistant.
The building official's opinion outranks your set. A local AHJ can require something the documents do not, and often does on rated assemblies and egress. No amount of grounding wins that argument on site.
The architect of record still owns design intent, and the RFI is still the instrument of record. Use grounded answers to avoid RFIs you should not have needed, and to write better ones when you do. Never use one in place of a written RFI response on anything that carries cost or life safety.
The failure mode to guard is stale documents. If ASI 9 is issued Tuesday and nobody loads it until Friday, the assistant will spend three days citing a superseded sheet with complete confidence. That is a document control failure, but it will feel like an AI failure, and it will end your pilot. Assign it to a person and check it weekly.
Yes, and that is the setting that matters most. Configured properly it says the approved set does not address the question and offers to draft the RFI. Test this before anything else: ask it something you know is not in the documents and see whether it invents an answer or admits it.
Document control, usually a project engineer, and about six hours per job at the front end if your set is already organized in Autodesk Docs or Procore. The ongoing work is loading each ASI and closed RFI, which is fifteen minutes a week on most jobs.
Start with your own superintendents and project engineers. Giving subs direct access to the approved set raises real questions about who is responsible for what they were told, and most contractors are better off answering the sub with a citation than handing over the tool.
Often more than with rated walls. When the owner's rep says something was in the base scope, being able to produce the specification paragraph and the addendum that changed it — in minutes, during the meeting — is worth more than being right a week later in a letter.
