If you work in more than one county, you almost certainly cannot answer that from memory for all of them, and neither can your foremen. The 2026 NEC is published. Plenty of states are still enforcing 2023. Some are still on 2020. Several enforce a state-amended version where a specific article has been struck or rewritten — California, Massachusetts, Michigan and others all publish their own amendments. Two jobs forty minutes apart can sit under different rules, and the person who finds out is the inspector.
Here is the scenario every electrical contractor has lived. A foreman on a medical office buildout needs to know whether he can run MC cable above the ceiling in a return-air plenum, or whether the spec forces him into EMT. He is standing on a lift, the ceiling grid goes in Monday, and he needs an answer in ten minutes. He asks the project manager, who is on another job. He asks a general-purpose chatbot on his phone, which gives him a fluent, well-organized, completely confident answer based on some blend of code editions and general practice, with no idea which county he is standing in or what the project specification says.
He pulls 1,400 feet of the wrong cable. The inspector red-tags the rough-in. Now you are pulling it out, buying conduit, and eating the labor, and the general contractor's superintendent is asking about the ceiling date in front of the owner.
The killer is not that the answer was wrong. The killer is that it was plausible. A wrong answer that sounds wrong gets checked. A wrong answer written in clean paragraphs with an article number attached gets acted on.
A grounded assistant is one that is only allowed to answer from documents you have approved — the code edition your jurisdiction adopted, the project specification, the approved submittals, the manufacturer's installation sheet — and that shows you which document and which section the answer came from. If the answer is not in that set, it says so instead of filling the gap.

This is the capability that matured in 2026: retrieval grounding with citations, where the assistant is fenced into your own material and every answer arrives with its source attached. The difference from the 2024 version is not that the answers got smarter. It is that a wrong answer became catchable. Your master electrician can click the citation, see it points at Division 26 Section 26 05 33 of the actual project spec, and either confirm it or catch that the assistant pulled from a superseded revision.

The value is entirely in the curation, and this is where most shops get it wrong by being too generous. Put in: the adopted code edition per jurisdiction you work in, with the state and local amendments as separate documents; the current issued-for-construction drawings and specification for each active job, with revision dates; the approved submittal package including the gear submittals; manufacturer installation instructions, which NEC 110.3(B) makes enforceable, not advisory; your own safety manual and your energized-work permit procedure built on NFPA 70E; and your standard installation details.
Keep out: superseded drawing revisions, code editions you are not working under, forum posts, and last year's spec from a similar job. That last one is the sneakiest. A specification from the same architect on a previous project reads exactly like the current one and will confidently give you the wrong conductor insulation type.
Version control is the whole ballgame. Every document in the set needs a revision date and a job number, and the assistant needs to be told which set applies to which job. If you cannot tell a bulletin from the drawing it superseded, the assistant cannot either.
The foreman opens the assistant on his phone, and it already knows he is on job 2437 because that is what he is clocked into. He asks the plenum question. He gets back: the spec section that governs wiring methods in return-air plenums on this job, quoted; the sentence in the general contractor's bulletin from three weeks ago that modified it; and a note that the jurisdiction is enforcing the 2023 NEC with state amendments, with the relevant article cited. Two of three sources agree; the third is silent.
He does not pull cable. He takes the two citations to the project manager, who spends ninety seconds instead of two hours, and if it is still genuinely ambiguous, an RFI goes out that morning with the exact spec language already quoted in it — which is the difference between an RFI answered in a day and one answered in a week.
The second use is quieter and probably worth more: the estimator. When a bid set lands with a 90-page Division 26 specification, the question "what does this spec require that our standard assembly does not include" is exactly the kind of question that gets skipped at 11pm the night before a bid. Asked against the approved set, with citations, it surfaces the arc-flash study requirement, the extended warranty clause, and the requirement for a specific breaker manufacturer that your bid assumed you could substitute.
Assumptions for an eleven-electrician shop doing commercial buildout and light industrial: 22 inspections a month across all jobs, a 9 percent failure rate, a loaded field cost of $58 an hour, and a reinspection fee that varies by AHJ but call it $125.

The honest reading of that table is that the routine reinspections are noise and the single scope-level rework event is the entire justification. You are not buying efficiency. You are buying a lower chance of the $28,000 morning.
A grounded assistant is a fast, honest reader of your documents. It is not the master electrician of record, and it does not carry the license. Anything that constitutes a code interpretation on an installation goes through the person whose name is on the permit — full stop. The assistant's job is to put the right paragraph in front of that person in ten seconds instead of forty minutes.
It is also not the authority having jurisdiction. Inspectors interpret, and local practice on things like working clearance measurement, bonding of gas piping, or receptacle placement in a specific occupancy can differ from what the printed article suggests. If the assistant's answer conflicts with what your inspector told you last month on the same street, the inspector wins and you should record that as a note in your own document set.
Never point it at energized work decisions. The arc-flash boundary, the incident energy category, whether an energized-work permit is justified at all — those come off the arc-flash study for that specific equipment and out of your NFPA 70E program, decided by a qualified person standing in front of the gear. An assistant can retrieve the label data and the study; it does not authorise anybody to open a door.
Not usefully, and there is a licensing question around loading a copyrighted code book into a tool as well — check your subscription terms. More practically, the code alone answers almost nothing on a real job, because the specification is usually stricter than code and the general contractor's bulletins modify the spec. The useful assistant reads all three and tells you where they disagree.
By making the grounded one faster and better for the questions they actually ask. If it answers plenum wiring methods, submittal status and "what did the bulletin change" in five seconds with the page attached, it wins on merit. If it is slower than a text message to the PM, it loses, and you cannot police that.
It should say so. That is the entire behavioural difference from a general chatbot, and it is worth testing before you roll it out: ask it ten questions your documents cannot answer and see how many it invents. If it invents any, the fence is not tight enough.
Not directly — your CE hours have to come from a state-approved provider and no assistant substitutes for that. What it does help with is the practical gap that CE never closes: knowing which of the three code editions on your jobs applies to the panel you are looking at right now.
