Most dock owners cannot answer that. Not because they are careless — because the answer is buried in a pile of handwritten trip tickets, faxed purchase orders and cooler temperature logs that somebody typed into a computer at the end of a long day, and the typing is where the pounds go missing.
Walk any Gulf shrimp dock in August and the paper is the same everywhere. The carbon-copy trip ticket the state requires from you as the wholesale dealer, filled in with a ballpoint on a wet clipboard. The purchase order that a distributor still faxes because their buyer has always faxed. The receiving log with the product temperature written in by hand, initialled, because your food-safety plan says somebody checks it and signs. All of it goes into a tray. At some point the settlement clerk types it in.
What changed in 2026 is that the model reads the artifact itself — the folded ticket, the fax, the initialled margin — rather than requiring a person to retype it into a clean form first.
Start with the trip ticket. Gulf states run trip ticket programs on the wholesale dealer, not the fisherman: species, pounds, grade or count size, price, vessel and license details, area fished, filed on the state's schedule. On a busy dock in the middle of the season that is dozens of tickets a week, each with six to fifteen lines, all handwritten, some by a deckhand who was awake for thirty hours.
Then the faxed or emailed purchase order. Distributors and secondary wholesalers send counts and pack specs — 16-20 headless, 21-25, U-15 — with delivery dates and sometimes a scribbled amendment across the top. Somebody reads it, types it into the order system, and the pack crew works from the typed version. If the pack size was misread, you find out when the truck arrives at their door.
Then the food-safety records: receiving temperatures, ice checks, cooler logs, sanitation checklists. Handwritten, initialled, filed in a binder that lives in the plant office and gets opened by an inspector or a customer's auditor. Nobody types those into anything, which is its own problem: when a buyer asks for six months of receiving temperatures on a specific lot, someone loses an afternoon in a binder.

The important word is ugly. Earlier document tools wanted a clean scan of a form they had seen before, in the same layout, with typed characters. Feed them a phone photo of a damp carbon copy taken at an angle under a sodium light and they produced garbage or nothing.

The 2026 generation reads the picture the way a person does. It handles the fold across the middle, the ballpoint that skipped, the count size written as "21/25" on one ticket and "21-25" on the next, the amendment scrawled sideways in the margin with initials next to it, the smear where a wet glove touched the ink. It reads the fax that came through crooked with the top line half cut off. It reads a hand-printed temperature log and pulls out the values, times and initials as a table.
Two things make this usable rather than merely impressive. First, it can tell you how sure it is, field by field, so you can route the uncertain ones to a person instead of letting them through. Second, running it on every single ticket costs less than the ice bill, because the price of this kind of work has fallen roughly tenfold since 2025. You are not choosing which documents are worth reading. You read all of them.
The boat offloads at 6:40 a.m. The dock hand fills out the trip ticket the way he always has — nothing about his job changes, which is the point, because retraining dock crews on tablets is how these projects die. He photographs it with the dock phone before it goes in the tray.
By 7:05 the lines are in the system: species, count size, pounds, price per pound, vessel, license, area. The settlement clerk opens a screen with nine tickets on it, seven green, two flagged. One flag is a count size that could be 26-30 or 26-35. One flag is a pounds figure where the ink skipped. She looks at the photos side by side with the extracted lines, fixes both in about ninety seconds, and approves the batch.
The trip ticket data is ready for the state filing. The settlement figures are ready for the captain, which matters more than anything on this list, because crew shares come out of these numbers and a shrimper who thinks the dock shorted him tells the whole fleet by Friday. The temperature log photo is filed against the lot, so when the distributor's auditor asks about a specific delivery, the record is one search away instead of one afternoon away.
Assumptions, all illustrative: a mid-size dock keys roughly 22,000 ticket lines across a season; hand-keying from handwritten source documents produces an error on about one line in 150; the average line carries about $340 of product value; and half of the errors get caught downstream by someone noticing a number that looks wrong.

Not all of that $24,820 is lost — some errors go in your favour, and those are worse, because that is the ticket where a captain concludes the dock is stealing. The number to hold onto is the exposure, not a profit figure. Errors in both directions cost you either money or trust, and on a working waterfront trust is the more expensive one to replace.
Prove it on your own dock before you believe any of this. Take last season's 300 tickets, run them through the reader, and compare the output against what your clerk keyed. The disagreement list is your real error rate, and it takes an afternoon to produce.

Some handwriting is genuinely unreadable and the correct behaviour is to say so. Judge a reader by what it does with a bad ticket: an honest flag beats a confident guess every time, and any tool that never flags anything is guessing.
Signatures and initials are a specific limit. The reader can see that a box was initialled and pull out the values next to it, but the responsibility behind that initial is a person's. Your food-safety plan names a person who monitors and a person who verifies. Those stay people. Reading the log into a searchable record makes the audit easier; it does not move the accountability, and no inspector will accept that it does.
Corrections stay human too. When a re-weigh changes a ticket, the amendment is a conversation between the dock manager and the captain, and the change should be made by a person with a note about why. And do not let the reader touch what gets filed with the state without a person approving the batch. Your dealer license is attached to those filings.
No, and trying to is usually the mistake. The carbon-copy ticket works in rain, in a glove, at 4 a.m., with no battery. Keep it. Add one step — a photograph before it goes in the tray — and let the reader do the typing. The crews keep their habits and the office gets the data an hour after offload instead of a week later.
The right comparison is not perfection, it is your clerk at the end of a fourteen-hour day in the middle of the season. Measure both on the same 300 tickets. In most operations the reader is at least as accurate on the clear tickets, faster on all of them, and — this is the real gain — consistent about admitting when a field is unclear, which a tired human never is.
That is one of the things that got noticeably better in 2026. A crooked fax with a count size crossed out and a new one written above it, initialled in the margin, is readable now. Set the rule that any amended line gets flagged for a person anyway, because an amendment on a purchase order is usually a change somebody made under pressure and it deserves thirty seconds of human attention.
Yes, and it is often the quietest win. Every buyer audit and every traceback request means somebody digging through a binder. Photographing the logs daily and letting the reader turn them into a searchable record means a request for one lot's receiving temperatures takes a minute. The binder still exists; you just stop paying an afternoon every time somebody asks.
Take twenty tickets out of last week's tray, photograph them on a phone, and see how much of each one comes back correctly. Twenty minutes, no purchase, no meeting. If eighteen come back clean and two get flagged for reasons you agree with, you have your answer about the other 22,000.
