On Aurora's Motor Mile, the Best Car Buyers Call Ahead in Amharic and Nepali

There's a stretch of Havana Street in Aurora that dealers call the Motor Mile — lot after lot, banners and balloons, a hundred thousand headlights pointed at the street. The salespeople there will tell you something the banners don't: a lot of their best buyers call before they visit. They call to ask if the listed sedan is still on the lot, whether the price is real, whether financing is possible with an ITIN. And in Aurora — a city that has become one of the most diverse in the United States — those calls arrive in Amharic, in Nepali, in Spanish, in Korean, sometimes all four before the coffee's cold. The lot that can only answer one of them is running at a fraction of its own foot traffic.

Aurora's diversity isn't an abstraction; it's addresses. Ethiopian and Eritrean churches, groceries, and coffee shops thread through the city's north side, and Amharic is a daily business language along East Colfax. Nepali-speaking Bhutanese families, resettled over the past two decades, have made Aurora one of their American centers — you hear Nepali at the DMV, in school pickup lines, and on the phone with every kind of local business. Spanish has been here longest of all. The city government prints in multiple languages. Most business phone lines still don't.

A used-car call, carried in both directions

Here's the Motor Mile call the way it goes with CallSphere's Live Interpreter on the line:

flowchart TD
A[Shopper calls a Havana Street lot about a listed sedan] --> B[Interpreter joins and he continues in Amharic]
B --> C[Salesperson hears the trim and price question in English]
C --> D[Salesperson confirms the car is on the lot and quotes the drive-out price]
D --> E[Shopper hears the answer in Amharic and asks about ITIN financing]
  E --> F{Finance manager available?}
F -->|Yes| G[Three documents listed in Amharic and a test drive booked for 5 pm]
F -->|No| H[Callback promised within the hour and number confirmed]

The interpreter joins the call and translates live, both directions: the caller speaks Amharic, the desk hears English; the desk answers in English, the caller hears Amharic. A few seconds of delay, nothing to install, and at the start of the call it can ask the caller to pick a language — which matters in a city where the next call might be Nepali. It covers more than 57 languages. For a dealership or repair shop, that's the difference between a test drive at 5 p.m. and a hang-up at 11 a.m.

Service bays hear it even more than sales

Sales calls get the attention, but service writers live this daily. A customer describing a noise — when it happens, what it sounds like, whether it changes with speed — needs real vocabulary, and most people only have that vocabulary in one language. When the description arrives through a nephew on speakerphone, the shop diagnoses the summary instead of the symptom. Wrong part ordered, second visit, everyone frustrated. With the interpreter on the line, the customer describes the shudder in Nepali in as much detail as she wants, and the writer hears every word of it in English. Fewer comebacks is not a soft benefit; it's the service department's whole scoreboard.

The other end of Colfax: appointment lines

Aurora is also a medical city — the Anschutz campus anchors one of the region's densest concentrations of clinics, pharmacies, therapy practices, and dental offices, and the neighborhoods around it are exactly the neighborhoods described above. Front desks there know the daily rhythm: the caller who starts in careful English and runs out of it at "prior authorization," the mother who hands the phone to her ten-year-old, the voicemail in a language nobody on staff can place, deleted with a wince.

A clinic front desk with the Live Interpreter on its line lets patients call for themselves. The caller picks Amharic or Nepali or Spanish at the greeting, explains what they need in their own words, and hears dates, times, and what-to-bring instructions back in their own language. Front-desk staff change nothing about how they work. What changes is the no-show rate, the intake accuracy, and the number of families who stop treating the phone as an obstacle between them and an appointment.

Frequently asked questions

Which languages matter most for an Aurora business?

Spanish first, almost everywhere. After that it depends on your block: Amharic and other Ethiopian and Eritrean languages on the north side and along Colfax, Nepali across much of the city, Korean near the older shopping corridors, Vietnamese and Burmese in pockets. The practical answer is that you don't have to choose — the interpreter covers 57+ languages on one line.

How does the caller pick their language?

At the start of the call, the interpreter can offer a spoken choice — no keypad menus to navigate. The caller says their language and the call proceeds with the interpreter translating both directions. Callers who want English just keep talking, and the call runs exactly as it always did.

Will it slow down busy sales calls?

Each translated sentence lands a few seconds behind the original — about the rhythm of talking through any interpreter, minus the wait to get one on the line. Most shops find calls get shorter overall, because nothing has to be repeated three ways and numbers stop being misheard.

Can it handle the call when the lot or clinic is closed?

Yes — pair it with CallSphere's AI receptionist, which answers around the clock in the caller's language, books appointments, and captures callback details. Staffed hours get the interpreter; after hours, the receptionist makes sure Saturday morning starts with a list of warm callers instead of a full voicemail box.
