Rickenbacker Moves Freight, Morse Road Moves Languages: Columbus Calls Need Both

Drive the two ends of Columbus in one afternoon and you'll understand the city's phone problem better than any report could explain it. Start on the south side at Rickenbacker, where cargo jets and intermodal trains feed a plain of warehouses that never really sleeps. Then drive north up I-71 and cut over to Morse Road, where the storefront signs switch to Somali, the malls sell abaya and gold and mobile phones, and the restaurants serve sambusa to three generations at once. Freight on one end, languages on the other — and in between, thousands of businesses whose phones connect the two all day long.

Columbus quietly became one of America's great arrival cities. Its Somali community is among the largest in the country, and its Bhutanese-Nepali community — families who came through refugee camps in Nepal and rebuilt their lives on the North Side and out through the northeast suburbs — is one of the largest anywhere. Add the Spanish-speaking west side and you have a metro where a receptionist's "How can I help you?" gets answered in a different language every hour.

The warehouses and the clinics have the same problem from opposite ends. The warehouse can't dispatch what it can't understand. The clinic can't treat who it can't schedule. Both problems live on the phone.

The dispatch desk at 4:50 on a Friday

Rickenbacker's economy runs on people, and a striking share of those people — drivers, dock workers, warehouse staff — speak Somali, Nepali, or Spanish at home. The staffing agencies that keep the buildings running, the drayage companies shuttling containers, the freight brokers moving loads: their phones ring with drivers confirming pickups, workers asking about shifts, and problems that need solving in the next ten minutes.

A dispatcher who can't understand "the gate won't release my container" in Somali doesn't just lose ten minutes. She loses the appointment slot, the driver loses the day, and the customer calls someone else next week. For a logistics operation, a live interpreter on the phone line is the cheapest reliability upgrade available: the driver speaks in his language, dispatch hears English, dispatch answers in English, he hears his language — all in the same call, a few seconds behind live speech.

Morse Road's waiting rooms fill by phone

Now the other end of town. The clinics, dental offices, and counseling practices serving the Northland corridor and the North Side see patients whose English ranges from fluent to brand-new. Every practice manager in the area knows the pattern: appointments made through a bilingual staff member who is only in on Tuesdays and Thursdays; sons and daughters calling on behalf of parents; no-shows that trace back to a time or a prep instruction that never quite landed.

In healthcare, the phone call is the front door. When a mother can call in Nepali and book her father's follow-up directly — hearing the date, the fasting instructions, and the insurance question in her own language — the appointment actually happens. When she can't, the visit slides, the condition worsens, and everyone pays more later. The interpreter doesn't make any clinical claims and doesn't need to: it simply makes the scheduling call work, which is where most of the failures were happening anyway.

One number, fifty-seven languages, both directions

CallSphere's Live Interpreter joins any staffed call and interprets both directions in real time across 57+ languages. At the start of the call it can ask the caller which language they'd like — useful in a city where the next caller might speak Somali, Nepali, Spanish, or Arabic. There's no second phone number, no app for the caller, no waiting on hold while someone conferences in a translation line. The person at your desk just talks, and so does the caller.

Here's a Friday-afternoon Rickenbacker call, the kind that decides whether a load moves today or Monday:

flowchart TD
A[Driver at a Rickenbacker gate calls dispatch speaking Somali] --> B[Interpreter joins and both sides hear their own language]
B --> C[Dispatch learns the pickup number was rejected at the kiosk]
C --> D[Dispatch reads back the corrected reference number]
D --> E[Driver repeats it in Somali and dispatch confirms in English]
    E --> F{Gate accepts the new number?}
F -->|Yes| G[Container released and delivery window saved]
F -->|No| H[Dispatch calls the terminal while driver waits on the line]

Every node in that chart is a place where the old version of the call fell apart. The reference number alone — read back and confirmed in two languages — is worth the subscription.

The overnight shift answers itself

Warehouses run around the clock; front offices don't. When nobody staffs the phone, CallSphere's AI receptionist answers the same line in the caller's language, takes the message or books the slot, and queues it for the morning team. A driver calling at 2 a.m. about a missed appointment gets handled, not voicemailed. A patient calling Sunday night to reschedule Monday's visit is rebooked before the office opens. Interpreter when staffed, receptionist when not — the phone number never changes.

Frequently asked questions

Which of Columbus's languages does it actually cover?

The interpreter covers 57+ languages, including the ones Columbus businesses hear most: Somali, Nepali, Spanish, and Arabic among them. The caller chooses their language at the start of the call, so your staff never has to identify a language by ear or keep a laminated cheat sheet at the desk.

How does it keep up with a fast, urgent call?

It interprets in the flow of the conversation — the other side hears the interpreted version a few seconds behind the speaker, in both directions. Urgent calls actually benefit most, because the alternative was a confused exchange, a hang-up, and a redial to somebody else.

Can a clinic use this without making medical claims?

Yes — it's a scheduling and communication tool, not a clinical one. It doesn't diagnose, and CallSphere doesn't claim medical certification. What it does is make the front-desk conversation — appointments, directions, insurance questions, prep instructions — understandable in both directions, which is where most patient phone friction lives.

Our drivers use nicknames for facilities and slang for equipment. Will that survive translation?

Plain, concrete speech works best, and confirmations are your friend: read back the number, restate the time, confirm the dock door. The interpreter carries names, numbers, and addresses through as spoken, and because it's two-way, your dispatcher can immediately verify anything that sounds off — which is more than the old hold-and-guess routine ever allowed.
