Behind the bulk plant, past the loading rack and the two 30,000-gallon storage containers, sits the part of the property nobody photographs for the website: about 240 used 250s, 500s and 1,000-gallon tanks waiting on sandblast, four cylinder cages, pallets of 20-pounders back from the exchange displays at the hardware stores, and two racks of 100-pound cylinders. Your plant manager is supposed to walk that yard, look at it properly, and log what he saw. In most operations I visit, the last dated entry in the binder is somewhere in April.
That is not laziness. From mid-October to March he is loading bobtails at 5:30 a.m. and covering a route when a driver calls out. From April on he is running tank sets, pressure tests, cylinder requalification paperwork and the summer-fill push with two fewer people than the plant had in 2019. The yard walk is the first thing that falls off the calendar, every year, at every propane marketer I have set foot in.
Here is the definition worth keeping: an autonomous inspection drone at a propane bulk plant is nothing more exotic than a camera that flies the same route on a schedule — it photographs every tank data plate, relief valve, saddle and cylinder collar in the yard, compares what it sees against your asset records, and hands the plant manager a short exception list instead of a blank inspection form.
Owners talk about "the yard inspection" as one task. It is three, and they have different consequences when they slip.
The workaround everybody pretends is fine: the yard gets a real count twice a year, condition items get noticed when something leaks or when the loss-control rep schedules a visit, and cylinder dates get checked at the fill point by whoever is filling. That last one is the honest weak spot. A filler working a 300-cylinder morning is not reading every collar.

Drones over industrial yards are not new. In 2024 somebody had to stand there with a controller, fly it, land it, and then scrub through the video. That is a different job, not a smaller one, and it is why most of these programs died after the second month.
In 2026 the flying became the boring part. Hyundai put AI-powered autonomous inspection drones to work at its Georgia plant and cut inspection time by roughly 90 percent — not because the drone flies faster, but because it flies itself on a fixed route, reads what it is looking at, and only surfaces the things that changed. Humanoid ground platforms moved out of demo videos and into real working facilities in the same window. For a propane bulk plant the practical version is a docked drone the size of a large toolbox and, if you want the cages covered too, a small ground unit that rolls the fill house aisle.

The drone launched before the first bobtail pulled out, flew for twenty-two minutes, and docked itself. What lands on the plant manager's phone is not video. It is nine lines:
Those last two lines are the ones that pay for the whole thing. Cylinder shrink is not one dramatic theft; it is a slow bleed of units that leave on a truck, sit at a customer's shop, or simply get logged wrong. Count twice a year and you learn in November that you are short, with no idea when it happened. When you count every week, you know it happened between 27 June and 4 July, which is a conversation with a specific route and a specific date, not a lecture at a safety meeting.

So roughly the same labor dollars, twenty-six times the coverage, and about $1,700 a year in cylinders you stop losing quietly. Hardware and service pricing for a docked unit varies too much for me to quote a figure honestly — get two quotes and make the vendor price the docking station, the yearly service and the storage of images separately, because that is where the surprise lives.
It does not sign anything. Your documented bulk plant inspection is signed by a named person with CETP training behind them, and no fire marshal, no state LP-gas board and no insurance carrier is going to accept "the drone said it was fine." The drone is evidence; the signature stays human.

It cannot torque a rain cap back on, cannot open a valve, cannot pull a cylinder off a pallet, and cannot do a leak check. It sees rust, but it does not tell you whether that rust is cosmetic or whether the tank needs to go to sandblast before it goes back out. Corrosion judgment on a container that will hold product at 200 psi is a person's call, made in person, and it should stay that way.
It is also poor at exactly the thing techs are best at: noticing something wrong that nobody put on the list. The smell at the rack. The hum from the compressor that was not there last week. A camera on a fixed route finds the changes it was told to look for. Keep the human walk — just stop pretending it is going to happen weekly, and let the drone cover the weeks it does not.
For routine flights inside your own fence line the operating rules and the vendor's setup do most of the work — but somebody in your building has to be accountable for it, the same way somebody is accountable for the forklift. Make it the plant manager, and put it in his job description rather than in an email.
Partly. Collar stamps under snow do not read, and wind limits will scrub flights on the days you most want the yard looked at. Plan for winter coverage to be worse than summer coverage and for the count to be your primary winter value, not the condition photos.
It exposes it, which feels worse for about six weeks and then is much better. The first three flights will produce a long list of disagreements between the yard and the system. Work that list down once, and after that the weekly exception list is short enough to read on your phone before you get out of the truck.
Not practically, and not without the customer's permission. This is a yard and bulk plant tool. Field tanks stay with your service techs and your delivery drivers, who are already the ones who report a leaning tank or a bad regulator vent.
