Lewiston Learned to Cheer in Somali at the Soccer Field. Its Front Desks Can Learn Too.

A few winters back, Lewiston taught the whole state a lesson on a soccer field. The high school team — built from boys whose families had come from Somalia, Kenya, Congo, and half a dozen other places — won Maine a state championship, and the bleachers cheered in Somali, French, and English at once. Nobody in those bleachers needed a lecture about integration. They were watching it, in cleats.

The city's front desks are still catching up to its bleachers. Lewiston today is two great language stories layered on one mill town: the Franco-American families whose grandparents came down from Québec to work the looms and who still pepper their English with French, and the Somali and Somali Bantu families who began arriving two decades ago and rebuilt whole blocks of a shrinking city into a growing one. Both communities do their business by telephone. Both routinely meet a phone that only works in English.

This is a story about front desks, not about goodwill — Lewiston has never lacked goodwill. It is about the receptionist at the clinic, the dispatcher at the heating company, the scheduler at the dental office: good people running phones that only work in one language while the city outside works in three.

Heating season is the great equalizer

Nobody in Androscoggin County is casual about heat. When the first real cold snaps in, the heating and plumbing companies triage all day — and the callers needing them most are often the least equipped to argue their case in English. A Somali mother in an apartment near Kennedy Park with a furnace blowing cold; a Franco elder on the outer streets who slips into French when she is anxious, which is precisely when she is calling; a landlord's handyman reporting in fragments. A live interpreter on the dispatch line lets each of them explain fully — and lets your dispatcher triage on facts instead of guesses. In heating season, that is not customer service. That is safety.

The clinic call after practice

Follow those championship kids home and you find the rest of the phone traffic: the twisted ankle that needs an X-ray, the sports physical due Friday, the grandmother's blood-pressure check, the toddler's first dental visit. Lewiston's clinics serve this community with real dedication — and their schedulers still spend afternoons trying to return calls in languages nobody at the desk speaks. With the interpreter on the scheduling line, the mother calls after practice, explains the ankle in Somali, and leaves with an appointment she fully understands. The desk never guessed once. The slot doesn't no-show.

Dental deserves a special word in Lewiston, because it is where language friction quietly does the most damage. A first cleaning for a six-year-old, a broken tooth after a fall on the ice, a denture adjustment for a Franco grandmother — each starts with a call where anxiety is already high and vocabulary is technical. Offices that can take that call in Somali or French fill chairs that English-only phones never even hear about, and the follow-up instructions actually get followed.

Twenty years of proof, one missing piece

Lewiston has already run the experiment the rest of the country debates. New families arrived; storefronts that had been dark for years lit up; a city that was losing people started gaining them. The businesses that leaned in early — that hired from the community, stocked what it cooked, learned the greetings — got two decades of loyal customers. The telephone is the piece that never got upgraded. It is also, conveniently, the cheapest piece to fix.

What joining the call looks like

CallSphere's Live Interpreter is a voice that joins your existing line and interprets both directions while you talk. It can ask the caller to choose a language at the start — Somali, French, Arabic, more than 57 in all — and from there each side simply speaks. The caller never downloads anything; your staff never repeats themselves into a translation app. Hear it yourself before believing anyone: the live demo is the popup at callsphere.ai, and it will hold a conversation in Somali right now.

Frequently asked questions

Does it understand both Somali and Maine French?

Yes — Somali and French are both among its 57-plus languages, and callers choose at the start of the call. A Franco elder can drift between French and English mid-sentence the way real conversation works; your staff hears it all in English.

We're a small heating outfit. What does this actually cost us?

How is this different from asking a bilingual employee to help?

Your bilingual employee has a job, a lunch break, and one pair of ears. The interpreter is on every call, every shift, in every language at once — and it frees that employee from being the office's unpaid translation department.

Will elderly callers be confused by it?

It behaves like a polite person on the line, not a robot menu. The caller hears a voice offer their language, then simply talks. For elders especially, being addressed in their own language is less confusing than English ever was.

Can we try it during our busiest week instead of a quiet one?

Please do — the pilot runs on your real line whenever you choose, and cold-snap weeks are when it proves itself fastest. Seven days, your callers, then a decision.
