The thing that changed is not the hardware — it is that the machine now understands what it is looking at well enough to hand a human a short, correct list instead of ten thousand photographs.
Every independent pet store has a task on the manager's list called the date walk. Somebody is supposed to go bay by bay through the treat wall, the chew bin, the toppers, the refrigerated case and the freezer, and check best-by dates on everything. Kibble carries a date code on the bottom gusset. Freeze-dried and dehydrated treats carry one on the back seam. Bully sticks and antlers sold by the each have a code on the case, not the item, so you have to remember when the case came in. Raw patties carry a lot code you will need if there is ever a recall.
The task is supposed to happen monthly. Be honest about how often it actually happens: twice a year, in January when you are counting for taxes, and again the week before a distributor rep visit. In between, the store carries an unknown amount of product that is already past date, sitting on the shelf where a customer can pick it up.
The reason it gets skipped is not laziness. It is that a 2,800-square-foot store has somewhere around 3,900 facings, the walk takes a retail lead ten to twelve hours to do properly, and there is never a ten-hour block in a week where the salon is running six dogs and two people called out.
The date check is only one of four things you would learn from a full pass down the aisles, which is why skipping it costs more than expired treats.

An autonomous store inspection is a machine driving your aisles after close, photographing every facing, and leaving one short list of exceptions at the register before you open — not a robot that restocks anything. That distinction is worth holding onto, because the version being sold as a stocking robot is still a research project and the version that reads shelves is not.
In a pet store the practical setup is small: a low ground unit that fits a 42-inch aisle, or in the plainest version a cart with cameras that a closing associate walks down each aisle in eleven minutes. Either way, the output at 6:05 the next morning is a list your retail lead can work in half an hour before the doors open: nine items past date, four within thirty days, two facings empty on the top-seller list, three shelf tags that disagree with the register, and — the day it matters — every location in the building holding a recalled lot code, including the two cases in the back stockroom that the manager would have missed.
The freezer is the interesting case. Glass doors fog, packaging frosts over, and lot codes on raw patty boxes are printed small. That bay usually still needs a person opening the door with a phone. Everything from the treat wall to the collar pegboard to the endcaps does not.
Assumptions, all illustrative for a single store: 3,900 facings, a full manual date walk taking 11 hours of a retail lead at $22 an hour loaded, currently done twice a year, and an expired-product write-off of roughly $2,900 a year in treats, toppers and refrigerated items that reach their date on the shelf.

Note what this arithmetic does not claim: it does not save you labor. It costs you a slightly different four hours a year and moves them from an impossible eleven-hour block to a manageable thirty minutes a morning. The money comes from selling short-dated product at a discount instead of throwing it out at full cost, and from turning a recall from a half-day fire drill into a coffee-break task. If you want to check your own baseline, weigh or total your damage-and-expired bin for one quarter and multiply by four.
Do not run any of this on the grooming floor or in the kennel runs. Dogs react to a moving machine at their eye level, and a startled dog on a grooming table attached to a loop is exactly the incident report you have spent your career avoiding. The salon, the bathing area, the drying room and the boarding wing are human-only inspection zones, full stop, and any vendor who tells you otherwise has never been in a grooming salon at 10 a.m.
Second limit: it sees the front of the shelf. Product pushed to the back, older dates hiding behind newer facings, the case of something in the stockroom — those still need a person rotating stock. Front-facing is not inventory.

Third: it cannot pull, credit or dispose of anything. The distributor return process — getting the return authorization, packing the case, getting it on the truck, chasing the credit memo on your next statement — is entirely human and entirely unchanged. And keep a person on damages. A chew bag that has been split open by a customer's dog, a dented can, a bag of kibble with a pinhole leak — some of that shows in a photo and some of it only shows when someone picks it up.
The camera-cart version is, today. The self-driving version is worth pricing when you are running multiple locations and the walk is happening in three buildings.
The stockroom is worth including and it is usually where the worst dates hide, because cases get pushed behind other cases. The wash bays have nothing to count. Aim the effort at retail shelving and the stockroom racks.

The valuable part is not finding the recall — your distributor emails you about that. It is knowing within twenty minutes exactly which of your locations hold it.
