Until about eighteen months ago, that same engineer built her shortlist the way sourcing has always worked in this trade: the incumbent molder, two shops her plant manager used at his last job, whoever the resin distributor rep mentioned over lunch, and a search on ThomasNet or the Plastics News processor directory. Then she emailed a capability statement request. You got the email, your sales engineer answered it, and you had a chance to talk your way in even if the fit was imperfect.
The persuasion step is where small and mid-size molders won work they had no business winning on paper. The 88-employee shop in Elkhart got the medical housing because the owner drove down and walked the buyer through the tool room. That still happens on the second half of the decision. It no longer happens on the first half.
Through 2026, agent-to-agent protocols and machine-readable business listings became normal on the buying side. The practical effect is simple and unsentimental. The person contacting you may be software doing research, comparison, or booking on a sourcing engineer's behalf — and the first cut is made against what a machine can read on your website, not against what your sales engineer can explain on a call.

Walk your own website and ask whether a machine could answer these without opening a PDF or looking at a photo of the floor:
Your sales engineer opens her laptop at 7:50. There are two meeting invitations she did not chase. One is from a medical device firm in Minneapolis that needed an ISO Class 8 molder running polycarbonate at 120,000 pieces a year; their assistant found the cleanroom line and the ISO 13485 expiry on your capabilities page and booked her at 10:30. The second is a consumer goods brand whose agent matched your 720-ton press and your in-house pad printing.
Neither company knew your name at 7 a.m. Nothing about your quality system or your Cpk history changed. The facts were simply in a form the software could read, so you survived the cut and got to the part where a human decides — which is still the part you are good at.
Assume a custom molder with eighteen presses that quotes 34 serious RFQs a year, wins 22% of them, and averages $180,000 in annual revenue per awarded program with a four-year program life. Assume being unreadable to buyer-side software costs you six qualified RFQs a year that you never see — a conservative guess, not a measurement.

You can prove or disprove the premise cheaply. Pull twelve months of RFQs and mark how each one arrived: incumbent relationship, rep referral, directory, inbound web, or trade show. If inbound web is near zero and everything came from people who already knew you, you are living entirely on your existing network, which shrinks every year as buyers retire.
Legibility gets you into consideration. It does not win the program. A sourcing agent will happily shortlist a shop that then blows the T1 date, and the buyer will remember. If your tool room is a two-week queue and your on-time delivery is 84%, being easier to find just means more people learn that faster.

It also does nothing for the deals that were always going to be won in person: the sole-source medical program where the customer wants to see your gowning procedure, the automotive program where the Tier 1 quality engineer wants to audit your PPAP files before he lets you quote, the defense work that will never be listed on anyone's public directory. Keep the flights and the plant tours.
And be careful about publishing capacity that is not real. If you list eight 500-ton presses and six of them are tied up on a two-year lawn and garden program that runs from January through May every year, say so in the volume band. Getting shortlisted for work you cannot start until July is worse than not being shortlisted at all.
Open your own capabilities page on a phone. If the tonnage range lives inside a photo of the floor, the certificates are logos, and the resins are described as "a wide range of thermoplastics," you have found the whole problem in ninety seconds. Rewrite that page as plain text with numbers and dates, put the press list in a real table, and set a reminder to update every certificate expiry at surveillance audit time.
No, and you should not. Molding prices depend on cavitation, resin, cycle, and volume, and no honest number exists before the print is reviewed. What the software needs is capability and eligibility facts — tonnage, shot size, cleanroom, certificates, resins, volume band. Price stays in the quote.
It overlaps, but the target is different. Search optimization is written to persuade a person who clicked. This is written so a machine can confirm that your 400-ton press handles a 6.2-ounce shot and that your IATF certificate does not expire before the program launches. Persuasive prose with no numbers scores well on the old game and fails the new one.
It matters most to you, because that is a concentration risk. When one of those accounts moves a platform to Mexico, you need new RFQs quickly, and the shops that are readable will be seen first. Fixing this while you are busy is much cheaper than fixing it while you are quiet.
Never publish part geometry, customer names under NDA, or anything covered by ITAR. Publish only the fact that you hold DDTC registration and can run controlled programs. That fact alone is a filter buyers use, and it discloses nothing.
