They figure out the prompts, build the skills, develop the instincts, and start shipping at a pace that makes the rest of the company jealous. The central move in scaling agents is to extract what's common into a shared platform layer that every team builds on. As agents multiply, you eventually face genuine coordination problems where multiple agents must work together on something larger than any one of them. This is where multi-agent patterns matter at the organizational scale. A multi-agent system uses an orchestrator to spawn and coordinate subagents, each handling a slice of a larger task, and Claude Code can run parallel subagents for exactly this kind of fan-out. The pattern is powerful but expensive: multi-agent runs typically consume several times more tokens than a single agent, so they're worth it when the work genuinely parallelizes and not otherwise.
At the org level, the orchestration question isn't only technical, it's structural — who owns the orchestrator, how do you keep one team's agent from stepping on another's, and how do you make the whole thing observable. The teams that scale well treat agent orchestration the way they treat any distributed system: clear ownership, defined interfaces between agents, and enough logging to debug when something goes sideways. A useful definition: scaling agentic AI is the discipline of replacing one team's informal coordination with shared skills, governed infrastructure, and explicit orchestration so that many teams run agents consistently rather than chaotically.
Two things go dark fastest when agents scale: cost and trust. Token spend that was a rounding error for one team becomes a real line item across many, and without central visibility you won't notice until the bill spikes. The fix is org-wide instrumentation — per-team, per-workflow spend that a founder can actually see — paired with the model-routing discipline of defaulting to cheaper models like Sonnet and Haiku and reserving Opus for genuinely hard work. Multiply that routing discipline across an organization and the savings are substantial; ignore it and the waste compounds just as fast.
Trust scales only with observability. When one team runs agents, everyone can see what's happening. When many do, you need centralized audit trails so that the organization retains the ability to answer "what did our agents actually do this week?" Without that, leadership loses the visibility that lets it trust agents with anything important, and the natural reaction is to clamp down and kill the very autonomy that created the value. Central audit and cost visibility are what let a founder keep loosening the reins instead of yanking them.
Scaling agents eventually reshapes the org chart itself. The companies that do this well tend to evolve a small platform or enablement function that owns the shared agent infrastructure, while product teams stay autonomous and compose on top of it. This mirrors how mature engineering organizations separate platform from product, and it works for the same reason: it gives teams leverage without forcing them to each solve the hard shared problems. The platform team's mandate is to make the right thing the easy thing, so teams adopt shared skills and vetted connectors because they're genuinely better, not because a policy forces them.
The founder's role in all this is to resist two opposite failure modes. One is laissez-faire sprawl, where every team does its own thing and the company fragments into incompatible islands. The other is heavy-handed centralization, where a committee must approve every agent and the speed that made agents worthwhile dies in process. The right path is a thin, strong platform layer plus autonomous teams — enough shared foundation to stay coherent, enough freedom to stay fast. Get that balance right and you scale from one team to the whole company without trading away the velocity that started the journey.

When you see the same skill, connector, or convention being reinvented by a second and third team. That duplication is the signal that shared infrastructure now pays for itself. Early on it can be a single owner; the point is that someone is accountable for the shared layer before sprawl sets in.
Centralize vetting and ownership of connectors in your platform layer, with permission templates teams reuse rather than each wiring their own. Every connector expands the organization's blast radius, so each one should be a reviewed decision, and shared, well-scoped connectors are far safer than dozens of independent ad-hoc ones.
Instrument per-team and per-workflow spend so it's visible centrally, enforce model-routing discipline that defaults to cheaper models and reserves the most capable one for hard work, and reserve multi-agent runs for genuinely parallel tasks. Visibility plus routing discipline is what keeps org-wide spend rational.
Choosing one of the two extremes: total sprawl where every team reinvents everything, or heavy central control where every agent needs approval and speed dies. The winning shape is a thin, strong shared platform plus autonomous teams composing on top of it.
