The change
WebSocketStream is a Promise-based alternative to the classic WebSocket API that exposes the connection as ReadableStream/WritableStream pairs. The benefit is automatic backpressure: when your consumer is slow, the underlying TCP window stops opening, and the producer naturally stalls instead of buffering bytes in browser memory. As of mid-2026, WebSocketStream is supported in Chromium-based browsers (origin trial ended; shipped in Chrome 124) but is still considered non-standard with one rendering engine implementing it. .NET 10 added a parallel WebSocket Stream API on the server side in January 2026. For AI streaming specifically — OpenAI Realtime WebSocket mode, Gemini Live API concurrent audio/video/text streams, custom Anthropic SSE proxies — backpressure is the difference between graceful degradation and OOM crashes.
What it unlocks
Voice and chat AI feeds are bursty. A 30-second LLM response can ship 200 tokens in 1 second then nothing for 3 seconds while the model thinks. Without backpressure, the browser absorbs the burst into its TCP receive buffer, which delays application-level handling. With WebSocketStream, the application's ReadableStream consumer rate directly controls TCP flow control, so audio playback in AudioWorklet pulls only what it can play. Gemini Live's pattern of concurrent audio/video/text streams maps cleanly onto multiple ReadableStream tees off one WebSocketStream. The result is fewer OOMs on slow devices and lower end-to-end latency under bursty load.
