Eleven units of 2x10 are on the books. Nine are on the ground. Nobody knows when the other two left, and the yard foreman is not going to find out on a Tuesday in July with four deliveries staged and aforklift down.

That gap is not theft in most yards. It is a bundle that got broken for a will-call pull and never adjusted, a lift that went out on a delivery ticket somebody signed and nobody closed, and a tally that was written in the rain. It costs you twice: once as an inventory adjustment in January, and once every week when a counter rep promises material that the system says is there and the driver cannot find.

## The physical count you schedule, and then keep not doing

Every building products dealer and millwork distributor has the same paper plan. Cycle counts weekly by row. Full physical count at year end for the accountants, with the CPA standing in the yard watching somebody read tags off banded lifts. In practice the cycle counts survive January and February, and then March arrives, the build season starts, and every hour of yard labor goes to loading trucks.

The back row is the worst of it. The cantilever rack against the fence with the 5/4 decking, the covered shed with the pre-primed trim, the units of prefinished plywood that have been under wrap since the price ran up. The flight happens before the first loader turns over, which matters more than it sounds. You cannot count a yard that is moving. At 5:30 nothing has been pulled yet, so what the drone sees is the true opening position for the day. By 6:15 the foreman has a list of nine locations to eyeball, not four thousand tags to read.

The second output is the one people forget to ask for: damage and condition. Wrap torn open on a unit of prefinished panel that has been rained on. A band broken on hip and valley material. Water pooling on the flat of a covered lift. Those cost you in returns and in claims, and they are invisible until a customer opens the bundle at their job site.

## The rack inspection you are already supposed to be doing

Here is the part that turns this from a nice-to-have into something your insurance carrier cares about. Your pallet and cantilever racking is supposed to be inspected on a schedule, damaged uprights tagged and unloaded, and the inspection documented. The industry standard for racking inspection and the general duty obligation to keep the place safe both point the same direction, and a forklift strike on a column base is exactly the kind of damage that gets noticed after the row comes down rather than before.

Nobody in a 22-person yard operation is walking every upright with a clipboard every month during build season. A flight that photographs every column base at the same angle every week, and flags the ones that changed, gives you both the inspection record and the early warning. On those two lines it loses. Say that out loud before somebody in your family says it for you. The line that carries it is the third one: orders promised on quantities that are not there. Suppose three orders a week get committed against phantom on-hand. Each one becomes a hot-shot buy at dealer cost, a late delivery on a framing crew's morning, or a lost sale to the yard across town. Put $180 of margin and goodwill on each, and that is $28,000 a year. Now the arithmetic works, and it works for a reason you can actually verify: count how many times last month your counter promised something the driver could not find.

## Where the drone is useless and a person is not

It counts units. It does not grade lumber. Nobody should be making a grade or moisture call from a photograph of a banded lift, and if your business turns on grade, that stays with your buyer and your yard foreman.

It struggles with anything not tagged, anything loose, and anything inside. Cull piles, remnants, returns waiting to be put away, and the pile of odd lengths behind the saw shed are going to stay a human problem. So is the millwork warehouse when it is packed floor to ceiling in October, because a drone needs aisle to fly and you have not had aisle since August.

Weather takes flights away from you in exactly the season you want them. Wind, driving rain and ice all ground it. Plan on a count cadence that survives a two-week gap in February.

And it will not fix a process problem. If broken bundles are not being adjusted at the point of the pull, the drone will find the same variance every week forever. The report is only worth what your foreman does with it by 7 a.m.

### Do I need to re-tag the whole yard first?

Usually not the whole yard, but expect to re-tag the worst rows. If a tag has faded to nothing or is buried under a band, no reader is getting it. Budget a week of yard labor for tags before the first real flight, and treat it as inventory hygiene you owed yourself anyway.

### Can it count inside the millwork warehouse, not just the yard?

Indoors works, and ground robots often work better than flying ones in a door warehouse where you have narrow aisles and pre-hung units racked high. The constraint is aisle width and clutter, not the technology. Yards with a covered shed usually get both.
